Law scores 18 points, Skelly notches a double-double
ROSEMONT, Ill. — Vic Law posted 18 points, four rebounds and tied his career-high-with five three pointers as a big first-half run propelled the Northwestern Wildcats (7-4, 1-1 Big Ten) to a convincing 84-50 win over Valparaiso Thursday night at Allstate Arena.
Coming off a dominant offensive performance earlier in the week, Northwestern carried that strong play into Thursday's game as the team shot a scorching 54.5-percent from three point territory on 12-of-22 shooting. On the defensive end, the Wildcats stifled the Valparaiso all night as the Crusaders turned the ball over 21 times and shot just 38.5-percent (15-of-39) from the field.
Bryant McIntosh finished the night with eight points and a game-high five assists, moving his career total to 614 which passes Jeff Horner for 12th all-time in Big Ten history. McIntosh now needs 20 assists to pass Yogi Ferrell for 11th all-time.
Gavin Skelly posted the second double-double of his career as he finished with 12 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Scottie Lindsey added 13 points of his own. Dererk Pardon finished just short of double figures with nine points along with six rebounds and three assists.
Valparaiso suffered its third loss of the season to fall to 8-3 on the year. Markus Golder led the Crusaders with 10 points.
The Wildcats started the game off red hot from behind the arc and rode that strong shooting performance to help open up a comfortable lead. The #B1GCats hit their first six three pointers of the game and finished the half shooting 50.0-percent (7-of-14) from deep.
Law paced the offense early on, hitting his first four threes of the game and scoring 15 of the Wildcats' first 24 points to help the 'Cats jump out to an early lead. A successful four-point play by Law gave NU a 20-10 lead with 13:53 remaining in the half.
Law's four-point play came in the middle of a 14-0 scoring run that Northwestern mounted midway through the first half. The run helped the 'Cats extend their lead to 27-10, during which Northwestern's defense held the Crusaders scoreless for over four minutes and without a field goal for over 8 minutes during the stretch.
Law would finish the opening half with a game-high 15 points along with three rebounds and two assists. Skelly added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Lindsey chipped in with five points and two assists of his own as the Wildcats took a 43-26 lead to the break.
Northwestern limited Valparaiso to 42.9 percent shooting (9-21) over the opening 20 minutes of play while the Wildcats connected on 16 of their 35 attempts. NU also assisted on 12 of its 16 first-half field goals while committing only three turnovers.
The Wildcats opened up their lead even further to start the second half. The #B1GCats' defense continued to lock down the Crusaders, holding them without a field goal for the first 6:53 of the half. An 11-0 run by the Wildcats during that stretch gave NU a 34-point lead with just over 13 minutes to play.
