Wildcats Dancing For Program-Record Third Straight Time

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern is headed to the NCAA Tournament for a program-record third straight time. The Wildcats had their name called Monday afternoon during the NCAA selection show and will host Butler at 1 p.m. Sunday at Martin Stadium.
NU is coming off a runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament following the championship game against Penn State Sunday. The Wildcats also finished second in the conference during the regular season with a 7-3-1 record in Big Ten play. The team is currently 12-7-2 overall.
Northwestern is 4-0 all-time against Butler with the last meeting a 2-1 road win on Oct. 31, 1999. The two teams met in an exhibition scrimmage at the beginning of this season in Indianapolis.
The Wildcats boast four All-Big Ten student-athletes with first-team selections Marisa Viggiano (midfielder) and Kayla Sharples (defender), third-teamer Hannah Davison (defender), and All-Freshman selection Regan Steigleder (midfielder).
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem is third all-time in NCAA history with 47 career shutouts, including 10 this season. Clem and the Northwestern defense recently had a 535-minute shutout streak, which extended from Oct. 7 to Nov. 3, the third-longest streak in program history. Clem also holds the two longest marks, both set last season.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is 7-2-1 at home in 2017 and has given up only four goals at Martin Stadium. The team is in the midst of a 624-minute shutout streak on its home pitch, not having conceded a goal in Evanston since Sept. 10.
The winner will play either No. 2 overall seed UCLA or San Diego State in the second round.
