Northwestern Primed for Big Ten Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 8 Northwestern opens Big Ten tournament play on Saturday, Nov. 4, with a match against ninth-seeded Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Winner of Saturday's contest will take on top-seeded Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 5 at noon CT.

The Wildcats enter the match having won four of their past six contests, scoring ten goals in the four victories. First year Tommy Katsiyiannis has recorded three goals and an assist in that stretch, bringing his team-leading points total to nine on the season.

The Scarlet Knights come into the weekend with back-to-back losses, falling to Penn State in their conference finale before losing to Columbia on Oct. 25.

The two teams last met when NU hosted Rutgers at Martin Stadium on Oct. 15. The 'Cats came out on top with three first-half goals, including two from Katsiyiannis and a goal and an assist from Mac Mazzola.

The win gave Chicago's Big Ten Team a second straight victory over the Scarlet Knights and a 3-2 advantage in their five all-time meetings. Rutgers' last victory over NU came in the first round of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament.

Head Coach Tim Lenahan has made it to the tournament finals on two occasions in his tenure at Northwestern, including a victory over Penn State in the 2011 championship game. Maryland has won each of the last three Big Ten tournament titles, while Indiana holds the most all-time with 12.

Katsiyiannis and classmate Garrett Opperman were named to the Big Ten Conference All-B1G Freshman Team.
