NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore forward Abi Scheid's shot at the buzzer rolled around and eventually off the rim, allowing Georgetown to escape with a 55-54 win over the Wildcats in the final game of the Challenge in Music City.
The Hoyas were the beneficiaries of a controversial blocking call in the final second of the game, allowing them to shoot a pair of free throws with the score tied at 54. Tatiana Thompson hit the first but missed the second, allowing Northwestern to advance the ball to half-court with 0.5 seconds left. Scheid had a good look at the basket, but the ball would not go through.
Scheid was one of three Wildcats to finish in double figures with 11. First year Lindsey Pulliam led the team with 16, her sixth double-digit scoring output of the season. Junior Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah had 12.
Kunaiyi-Akpanah also grabbed 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
The Northwestern defense was in shutdown mode once again, holding the Hoyas to 31 percent (19-of-62) from the field. The 'Cats continue to pace the Big Ten in scoring defense and opponent field goal percentage.
Scheid added five rebounds, three assists, and a steal to her line, while Pulliam had four rebounds and a steal.
Georgetown got off to quick start out of the gate and eventually led by 14 with six minutes to play in the second quarter. Northwestern battled back and completely closed the gap, tying the game on a Scheid buzzer-beating three at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was back-and-forth until a dramatic final second decided the outcome of the game.
Chicago's Big Ten Team next plays at Syracuse in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
