NASHVILLE, Tenn. – First-year guard Jordan Hamilton's jumper with 11.4 seconds proved to be the game-winner as Northwestern locked down on its final defensive possession to beat Auburn, 49-48, Saturday at the Challenge in Music City.
After leading for nearly the entire game, Northwestern had to battle back from down 48-43 with just under two-and-a-half minutes left. The Wildcats scored the final six points of the game down the stretch, with the last four coming from Hamilton.
"We handled the last two minutes with a lot of poise and made big shots," head coach Joe McKeown said. "We made big hustle plays to win the game. I thought our defense was phenomenal tonight."
Chicago's Big Ten Team improved to 5-1 with the win. The Wildcats lead the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing only 54.2 points per game. Opponents are only shooting 33 percent against NU through six games this season.
Hamilton finished with eight points on 3-of-5 from the field, five rebounds, and four assists.
"[Hamilton] plays way above her age, being a first year in college," McKeown said. "She never gets rattled, and I am always amazed at how calm she stays. That was a huge bucket tonight, and she was fearless taking the shot."
Sophomore forward Abi Scheid scored a game-high 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Scheid was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. First-year guard Lindsey Pulliam once again reached double figures with 12 points. She has now crossed the 10-point mark in five of her first six career games. Pulliam and Scheid lead the team with 13.7 points per game.
Senior Oceana Hamilton and sophomore Bryana Hopkins both made major contributions to help Northwestern to victory. Hamilton scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Hopkins recorded a career high with 10 rebounds.
Northwestern shot 41 percent from the field and 42 percent from three. The Wildcats held Auburn to 32 percent from the field and just 4-of-18 (22 percent) from deep.
NU completely locked Auburn down in the first half, holding the Tigers to 13 points on 6-of-28 from the field. The 'Cats led 26-13 at the half.
