EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern secured the No. 2 seed, and home-field advantage, in the 2017 Big Ten Tournament and will face seventh-seeded Purdue Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Martin Stadium.
The Wildcats (10-6-2, 7-3-1) beat Michigan State earlier Wednesday night, 1-0, to lock up home-field in the quarterfinals and waited out the results from across the rest of the Big Ten. Northwestern jumped Penn State after the Nittany Lions 1-0 loss to Wisconsin, and the 'Cats own the tiebreaker over Minnesota because of a 2-0 win on Oct. 12.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is on a roll, having won four straight conference matches by shutout to close the regular season. Northwestern reached double-digit wins for the third straight year, is hosting the quarterfinal round for the third straight year, and is looking to advance to the semifinals for the third time in the past four seasons.
Purdue (10-6-2, 5-4-2) won the regular season contest, 2-0, in West Lafayette but won just one of six down the stretch following that match on Oct. 1.
Northwestern is 6-2-1 at home this season and on a four-match winning streak at Martin Stadium.
The semifinals and championship match will be played at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
