Northwestern Advances in Big Ten Tourney With Dramatic Comeback Win

10/29/2017 3:05:00 PM | Field Hockey

Wildcats score twice in final four minutes to move on to Big Ten semifinals

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Exhale.

With its postseason fate hanging in the balance, 10th-ranked Northwestern can hopefully breathe a bit easier following a late rally to defeat No. 20 Rutgers, 4-3, Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten tournament.

Trailing by a goal with under four minutes remaining, the Wildcats got a score from Puck Pentenga off a penalty corner before Pascale Massey notched one of her own with 1:49 left, giving NU the come-from-behind win.

The victory advances Northwestern to the semifinal round of the Big Ten tournament Friday in East Lansing, Michigan. The fourth-seeded 'Cats will face off against top-seeded Michigan at 10 a.m. Central time.

Rutgers gave NU all it could handle, and more in Sunday's quarterfinals. Despite leading 2-1 at halftime, the Wildcats found themselves in trouble in the final minutes of the match as Rutgers tied the game with 17:23 remaining and then took the lead with 8:57 left.

Facing the possibility of its shot at a Big Ten tournament crown and an NCAA tournament berth slipping away, the Wildcats rallied. As the clock ticked under four minutes remaining, Northwestern earned a corner and Pentenga cashed in as she ripped a shot by Gianna Glatz to level the score 3-3. Eva van Agt and Kirsten Mansfield were credited with assists on the play.

As the end of regulation approached, the Wildcats earned another opportunity on a corner. Again Northwestern went to Pentenga, but her shot from the top of the circle was deflected by a Rutgers defender and sailed toward the crossbar. Perhaps in self-defense, Massey raised her stick to her head and deflected the ball by Glatz for a highlight-reel goal that gave the hosts the lead for good.

The Scarlet Knights stunned Northwestern out of the gates as Kassidy Shetler scored at the 5:16 mark, knocking home a loose ball to put Rutgers up 1-0.

NU controlled the remainder of the opening half and eventually tied the match at 24:52. Off a corner, the initial shot clanged off the crossbar, but Mansfield batted the ball out of the air and into the goal to make it 1-1. Northwestern would add another goal at 28:14 with Massey scoring off a broken corner as the hosts led 2-1 at the break.

Rutgers wouldn't go away, though, getting goals off corners by Gianna Mancini and Austyn Cuneo to go in front, but the Wildcats made the winning plays down the stretch to earn the dramatic win.

Northwestern finished the match with advantages of 17-6 in shots and 10-6 in penalty corners.

Friday's match against Michigan, with a berth in the Big Ten tournament championship match on the line, can be seen live on Big Ten Network.
