Miller's OT Game-Winner Lifts Wildcats Past Hawkeyes, 5-4

10/13/2017 5:01:00 PM | Field Hockey

Pentenga posts hat trick for Northwestern

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior Sophia Miller tallied her first goal of the season 5:20 into the first overtime session, giving ninth-ranked Northwestern a hard-fought 5-4 win over No. 22 Iowa Friday afternoon at Grant Field.

NU (11-4, 5-1 B1G) remained one game behind Michigan for first place in the conference standings with two matches remaining. The Wildcats and the Wolverines are set to square off in Ann Arbor next Friday.

Puck Pentenga tallied her first collegiate hat trick for NU.

Northwestern put the pressure on the Hawkeyes right out of the gates and it paid off by earning a penalty corner seven minutes into the contest. Pentenga's initial shot was saved but the rebound came out and eventually made its way back to Pentenga who ripped it past Katie Jones, putting the visitors up 1-0 at the 7:29 mark.

It didn't take NU long to build upon its lead as Pascale Massey was able to get in alone on Jones who was able to make the first save, but Massey got the rebound and slipped it past Jones just under nine minutes into the match.

Northwestern thoroughly dominated the contest through the first 26 minutes as it didn't allow Iowa to record a single penalty corner or a shot. However, the Hawkeyes made the most of their first corner attempt. Madeleine Murphy inserted and then got the ball back on the doorstep for a goal to get the hosts within 2-1 with 8:09 left in the half.

The opportunity swung the match in Iowa's favor. The Hawkeyes were awarded their second penalty corner as the clock ticked under three minutes remaining in the half and advantage again as Sophie Sunderland deflected in a shot to tie the match, 2-2.

Northwestern surrendered only two shots over the opening 35 minutes, but both resulted in goals. The 'Cats recorded nine shots of their own in the first half but were forced to settle for the halftime tie.

NU started the second half the way it opened the first. Massey immediately raced the ball down the field and earned a penalty corner just 15 seconds into the period. Pentenga capitalized as she got a deflection to get past Jones, giving the Wildcats the lead back just over a minute into the half. Sophia Miller and Kirsten Mansfield were credited with assists on the play.

Northwestern earned its eighth corner of the match just a couple minutes later and Pentenga completed the hat trick as her shot bounced over Jones, making it 4-2. Assists were credited to Miller and Eva van Agt.

Iowa continued to capitalize on its own corner opportunities, though, as Ellie Holley scored on a deflection with 19:50 still remaining to get the hosts back within a goal.

As the clock ticked down, yet another penalty corner allowed Iowa to tie the game as Murphy scored with just 1:46 remaining, forcing overtime.

Kalfas came up with a big save on a shot by Katie Birch early in the extra session to keep the Wildcats alive. On the other end, Miller's entry into the circle was deflected by van Agt and Jones was forced to make a diving stick save to keep the match going.

However, moments later, Miller possessed the ball from outside the circle, dribbled to the right and beat Jones to the far post, giving Northwestern the dramatic win.

The Wildcats return to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when they host UMass at Lakeside Field.
