EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will host the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday in what will be the first home conference dual of the season at 2 p.m. CT in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats are back in action for the first time since a demanding two days at the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. A total of 39 teams and over 400 wrestlers made this year's event the biggest in its history.
The team placed 16th to finish well inside the top half of the field, and several NU wrestlers put on extremely impressive displays. Redshirt-sophomore Conan Jennings (285) and senior Jacob Berkowitz (197) both took eighth place, while true freshmen Sebastian Rivera (125) and Ryan Deakin (149) took fourth and third in their respective weight classes, while wrestling unattached.
Chicago's Big Ten Team and Purdue will enter Sunday's match with identical 5-2 records. Both squads suffered losses to ranked opponents in their first Big Ten action of the year, with Purdue losing to No. 3 Iowa and Northwestern falling at No. 4 Ohio State.
The match will begin a series of four straight home contests for the Wildcats, each against Big Ten opponents.
PROTECTING THE MAT
In the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, four NU wrestlers put in outstanding performances on their home floor at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior Jacob Berkowitz won six bouts to finish in eighth place, with his only losses coming to opponents now ranked nationally. Conan Jennings also took eighth place, racking up four wins in the process. Sebastian Rivera beat the No. 17 wrestler and narrowly fell to No. 8 Tim Lambert in his only loss on his way to finishing fourth at 125 lbs. Fellow freshman Ryan Deakin won four matches over opponents currently ranked in the top 20 nationally, taking third place in the tournament.
NATIONAL ATTENTION
Following his performance at the Midlands Championships, Northwestern senior Jacob Berkowitz received national recognition. His 16-5 overall record for the 2016-17 season has earned him a spot at No. 19 in the latest rankings by InterMat.
TOO CLOSE TO CALL
The recent matches between Northwestern and Purdue have been very competitive contests. Over their last six meetings, the teams have split the victories with three apiece. Four of the six have been decided by six points or less.
