COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern's trip to Maryland was highlighted by senior Nia Coffey joining an exclusive club with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. She is only the fifth player in Big Ten women's basketball history to rack up those numbers.
Coffey came in to the day needing just four points to reach the milestone and ended the game with a game-high 22.
The Wildcats dropped the game at No. 3 Maryland, 96-65.
Christen Inman also had a solid performance with 17 points, her third straight game with more than 15. She has scored in double figures in eight of the last nine. Inman shot better than 50 percent from the field for the 10th time this year. Ashley Deary was held off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter but grabbed six rebounds from her point guard position, while dishing out four assists.
Northwestern shot better than 40 percent from the field and nearly matched Maryland from the free-throw line, but the Terps made 10 three-pointers to the 'Cats one and shot 49 percent from the field.
Maryland outrebounded the Wildcats, 47-30, and turned those boards into 26 second chance points.
Northwestern fell behind in the first half as it struggled from the field, shooting just 27 percent. The 'Cats were much better on the offensive end in the final 20 minutes, led by Coffey, who scored 17 of her points in the second half.
After playing No. 11 Ohio State and No. 3 Maryland back-to-back, Northwestern travels to Minnesota on Wednesday to take on the Golden Gophers (9-7, 0-3).
