Northwestern Comes Together for Emotional Win at Welsh-Ryan

1/14/2017 4:01:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern, playing for the first time since sophomore Jordan Hankins passed away, defeated Indiana 80-67 on an emotional afternoon at a packed Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday.

The team honored Hankins with a moment of silence before the game in front of 2,482 fans.

The inspired Wildcats (14-4, 3-2) exploded on offense with five players scoring in double digits: seniors Nia Coffey, Christen Inman, Ashley Deary and Lauren Douglas along with sophomore Amber Jamison.

Jamison, wearing No. 5 in honor of Hankins, scored 13 points, her second highest total of the season. She was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Coffey posted her tenth double-double of the season and 50th of her career with 14 points and 14 rebounds and also added six assists. She continued her record-breaking streak of 66 straight games scoring in double digits.

Deary led all scorers with a season-high 18 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and collecting eight assists. Inman scored 13 and Douglas chipped in 11. Freshman Abi Scheid registered nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The 'Cats finished the game shooting 49 percent, their highest in conference play. They also held Indiana to just 32 percent on field goals, the lowest percentage allowed against a conference opponent.

Northwestern opened the game with great energy behind the home crowd and used an 8-0 run to build a nine point lead. Deary wove through the Hoosier defense and scored a buzzer-beating layup to end the quarter with a 23-12 lead.

Indiana fought back in the second quarter with an 8-0 run, but the 'Cats remained on top at the half, 32-27.

Scheid provided a spark off the bench in the third quarter, scoring seven of her nine points. Jamison hit a momentous three halfway through the period and Northwestern entered the fourth with a 57-46 lead.

The Wildcats closed the game out comfortably in the fourth without letting their advantage dip below eight.

After the final buzzer, the team gathered at half court for a moving rendition of the Alma Mater.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Tuesday, when it hosts Michigan State at Welsh-Ryan Arena at 8 p.m. CT.
