EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 25 Northwestern looks to match the school record for consecutive Big Ten wins Wednesday when it travels to 23rd-ranked Purdue. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. Central time.
A win on Wednesday would be Northwestern's seventh straight in Big Ten play which would match the school record. NU has won seven consecutive conference games on three occasions but not since the 1932-33 squad accomplished the feat en route to a Big Ten championship. A win on Wednesday would give NU its best 10-game start to the conference season since that 1932-33 team opened 8-2.
At 18-4, Northwestern is off to its best 22-game start to a season in school history.
The Wildcats are coming off a 68-55 home win over Indiana on Sunday night. Bryant McIntosh paced Northwestern with 21 points and 8 assists while Sanjay Lumpkin matched a career high with 15 points. NU held Indiana to a season lows of 55 points and a .321 field goal percentage.
NU made its season debut in the Associated Press poll this week, coming in at No. 25. It is the Wildcats' first national ranking since the 2009-10 season.
Northwestern already is 4-1 on the road in Big Ten play this season. The Wildcats have posted five or more road wins in conference play three times in school history, most recently during the 1958-59 season.
The Wildcats are limiting their opponents to 38.3 percent shooting from the field this season, the 10th-best mark in the nation. Northwestern's foes shot 40.1 percent during the 2015-16 season, the school's best mark since the 1998-99 season. The Wildcats' average of 63.7 points allowed per game ranks second in the Big Ten to only Wisconsin (60.6 ppg).
The Wildcats sport a 1.59 assists-to-turnover ratio (377 assists, 237 turnovers) this season ranking them first in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation. NU's average of only 10.8 turnovers per game is the 15th-best mark nationally while its 17.1 assists per game rank 13th.
Northwestern and Purdue have split their last six meetings. The Wildcats and Boilermakers also will meet up in the regular-season finale for both teams either March 4 or 5 in Evanston.
Scouting Purdue
The Boilermakers (17-5, 6-3) suffered an 83-80 loss at Nebraska their last time out on Sunday. Caleb Swanigan posted 14 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists while Dakota Mathias scored a team-high 19 points. Swanigan ranks second in the Big Ten in scoring (18.5 ppg) and first in rebounding (12.7 rpg) while Isaac Haas is second in the league with a .623 field goal percentage. As a team, Purdue ranks atop the conference with 9.6 three-point field goals per game, a .419 team three-point field goal percentage and averages of 19.7 assists and 82.7 points per game.
