EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 10 Northwestern dominated its ITA Regional Final on Saturday against Georgia Tech at the Combe Tennis Center, winning 4-0 and booking a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
The Wildcats will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to compete against 15 other regional winners on Feb. 17-20. This is the first time in the history of the event that the Wildcats have progressed to the Championships.
"We're thrilled to have the huge honor of playing at National Indoors," Head Coach Arvid Swan said. "It was a great performance across the board and our guys have earned the chance to compete against the top teams in the country."
The 'Cats faced a stern doubles test from the Yellow Jackets but ultimately took home their sixth doubles point of the year. Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba blew past the Jackets at No. 1, 6-1, but Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini fell at No. 3, 6-3. Dominik Starý and Strong Kirchheimer clinched the point at No. 2 with a dramatic late break to win 6-4.
The singles matches were a straightforward affair, as Shropshire doubled the Northwestern lead to two after his comfortable 6-0, 6-3 win over Carlo Benito at No. 3
Konrad Zieba continued his hot start to the season with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over No. 61 Andrew Li at No. 2 singles. Moments after, Dominik Starý completed the sweep for the Wildcats with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Carlos Divar at No. 4.
In a heavyweight No. 1 singles matchup, No. 26 Strong Kirchheimer impressed against No. 9 Christopher Eubanks, taking the first set 7-6 after an intense 8-6 tiebreak. Ben Vandixhorn also ended his match with a one-set lead while Jason Seidman was in the middle of a second set push to tie the match.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next weekend when it hosts Boise State on Friday, Harvard on Saturday, and Duke on Sunday.
