EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern rolled past Boise State in the first of three weekend home matches with a 4-0 shutout on Friday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.
The win was the Wildcats' seventh in a row to begin the 2017 season. The 9th-ranked 'Cats (7-0) continue to chase program history, needing just three more wins to claim the best ever start to a season.
"We had a good performance against a quality team," head coach Arvid Swan said. "Boise State is a team we play quite often and have a lot of respect for. It was good to play a complete match in doubles and singles."
The Wildcats got off to a dominant start in doubles, as they have done in every match so far this season. Northwestern is 7-for-7 in securing the doubles point. Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba got things started for the 'Cats with a 6-1 win at No. 1, and Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý quickly followed suit with a 6-1 win of their own at No. 2. Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini led 4-2 at No. 3 when their match went unfinished.
With the first point of the match secure, the Wildcats got to work in singles. Konrad Zieba continued his torrid pace, picking up his fifth consecutive win with a straight set victory that included a first set shutout.
26th-ranked Strong Kirchheimer picked up his team-leading 12th win of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1. And Jason Seidman, playing up at No. 5 on Friday, clinched the team win with another straight set decision. Seidman is 9-4 in his first season in the starting lineup.
Northwestern led on all three of the unfinished courts, including Ben Vandixhorn, who was just a game away from the win at No. 4.
Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald delivered the honorary first serve before Friday's match.
"Fitz is the best," Swan said. "Our team is so appreciative for him to come out and serve the first ball. It was so much fun to have him here. He is the best football coach in the country, and we are just very appreciative to have him do that for us today."
The Wildcats three match home stand continues tomorrow when they host Harvard at 12:30 p.m. Parking and admission to the Combe Tennis Center are free.
