
Northwestern Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 13 Northwestern continued its hot start to the season on Sunday, defeating Louisville, 4-2, and IUPUI, 7-0, in a doubleheader at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats are now 4-0 after marquee wins over TCU on Friday and Louisville Sunday.
Against the Cardinals, Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini made quick work at No. 3 doubles of Christopher Kougacheff and Nicolas Rouanet, winning 6-3. Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý wrapped up their set moments later against George Hedley and Brandon Lancaster, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Wildcats.
The freshman Starý continued the hot start to his collegiate career with a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 victory over Sean Donahue at No. 4 to give the Wildcats a two-point lead.
Ben Vandixhorn fell at No. 5 to Brandon Lancaster, 6-3, 6-3, before Konrad Zieba extended the lead back to two points with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 against Nicolas Rouanet.
Sam Shropshire narrowly lost in three sets at No. 3 to Parker Wynn, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Louisville closed the lead to 3-2.
The 'Cats were locked into two three-setters at No. 1 and No. 6, needing one point to clinch the match, and Jason Seidman delivered with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory to seal the match at 4-2. Strong Kirchheimer's match at No. 1 ended unfinished at 6-3, 4-6, 6-5.
"I was really pleased with the win," head coach Arvid Swan said. "I thought the guys did a great job. We were extended in a lot of matches, and I thought we had a great approach."
In the second half of the doubleheader against IUPUI, Northwestern picked up where it left off with Ephron and Lorenzini blitzing the Jaguars at No. 2 to the tune of a 6-1 set. Kirchheimer and Starý followed suit at No. 1, winning 6-1 to earn the doubles point.
The 'Cats have won all four of their doubles points so far this season.
Zieba finished off his excellent weekend and won in straight sets for the third time, shutting out Steven Christie at No. 2, 6-0. 6-0. Vandixhorn picked up his second win of the season, defeating David Beasley at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Seidman clinched the match for the 'Cats at No. 5 with his 6-1, 6-2 takedown of Marcus Nalley. Kirchheimer added the fifth team point at No. 1 after beating Jac Newis 6-2, 6-4.
Brenden Volk, competing in his first career dual match, earned his first career dual win at No. 6, beating Bradley Luetschwager 7-5, 6-1. Starý came away victorious at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4, to close out a successful afternoon and end the match at 7-0.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next weekend when it hosts the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Evanston on Saturday and Sunday. The Wildcats will face Memphis on Saturday and either Georgia Tech or No. 18 Stanford in the final on Sunday.
