As a team, Northwestern shot 45.6-percent (26-of-57) from the field to improve to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. This is the best record the Wildcats have had at this point in the season since the 1995-96 campaign.
The Wildcats got off to an early 8-2 lead as Allie Tuttle put in three easy layups and Amber Jamison sunk a jumper. Tuttle set a new career-high in scoring with her six early points.
Michigan State's Tori Jankoska scored five straight to cut NU's lead to 8-7. She would finish with 25 points to lead all scorers. The 'Cats finished the quarter on a 12-3 run to go up 20-10.
Northwestern continued to extend its lead in the second quarter. After an MSU missed shop, Nia Coffey got the rebound and found a surging Ashley Deary for a breakaway layup, extending the 'Cats lead to 28-15.
After calling a timeout, the Spartans heated up from three, sinking four on their first five possessions. MSU shot 48% from three for the game and tallied 11 total. The Wildcat lead was cut to 31-29. After trading buckets down the stretch, NU took at 37-36 lead into the half.
The Spartans didn't let up to start the second half, scoring first to take a 38-37 lead. It was their first of the game. MSU pounded the boards early, putting all their missed shots back in.
But Amber Jamison started to catch fire and hit an open corner three to tie the game at 42. A few moments later she put the 'Cats back on top, sinking another three-pointer.
After a Northwestern foul, Michigan State had one more shot from the line. Northwestern coach, Joe McKeown, called Jamison over and told her to stand on the corner of NU's three-point line.
The next free throw bounced off the rim to Deary who drove down the court to find a wide open Jamison who hit her fifth three of the night to put NU on top, 55-48, at the end of the quarter. Her five three-pointers were the most any Wildcat has made in a game this year.
Jamison scored 11 points in the third quarter, while the Wildcats held Michigan State to just 12 points in the quarter.
The Wildcats didn't look back in the fourth. Around the four-minute mark, Deary went on her own 6-0 run, stealing the ball on her way to a breakaway layup and hitting four free-throws to bring Northwestern's lead back to 13. The 'Cats continued to hit free throws down the stretch to close out a 76-65 victory.
