EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's women's tennis team opens the dual match portion of its season Saturday when it hosts a pair of matches at Combe Tennis Center. The Wildcats open up with Akron at 11 a.m. prior to taking on Chicago State at 5 p.m.
Admission is free of charge for all matches.
The Wildcats return eight letterwinners from last year's squad that posted a 14-11 overall record against a challenging schedule, including a 10-1 mark in Big Ten Conference play.
Under the guidance of head coach Claire Pollard, the Wildcats appeared in the NCAA tournament for the 18th consecutive season, advancing to the second round before being edged by third-ranked North Carolina.
Northwestern's lineup features three doubles teams that are ranked in the top 25 in the nation in the first ITA rankings of the season. The Wildcats are paced by the duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp who start the dual match season ranked No. 6. The pairing earned their first invitation to the NCAA Doubles Championship last season.
Also earning a national ranking to start the campaign is the team of Rheeya Doshi and Jillian Rooney who come in at No. 23 while the duo of Erin Larner and Lee Or are right behind at No. 24.
Florida is the only other team to join the Wildcats in having three doubles teams ranked among the top 25 in the nation to open the season.
On the singles side, Lipp has earned a ranking of No. 104 heading into next weekend's opener.
Akron posted a 15-10 dual match record last season while Chicago State was 3-19 a year ago.
