'Cats Open Dual Match Season with Two Shutout Wins

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's women's tennis team opened up the dual match portion of its season by notching a 7-0 win over Akron on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats cruised in grabbing the double point thanks to wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The sixth-ranked duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp easily disposed of Karalina Maksimava and Carli Knezevich, 6-1, while 24th-ranked Erin Larner and Lee Or topped Shannon Newnes and Rita Pedroso by the same score.
In singles action, Northwestern rolled to four straight-set wins. Jillian Rooney had no trouble with Luisa Echeverry at No. 4 as she only dropped one game in notching a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win.
At No. 5, Brooke Rischbieth dominated Carli Knezevich to the tune of a 6-3, 6-1 win that put the Wildcats up 3-0 in the match. Chatt clinched the match for NU when she finished off Rita Pedroso for a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Freshman Nina Van Oost was victorious in her Northwestern debut, notching a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Karalina Maksimava at No. 6.
Rheeya Doshi fought off a rough start in her return to the Northwestern lineup following a redshirt year, coming back to defeat Sophia Geier 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5).
Larner finished off the sweep for the 'Cats by earning a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over Ariadna Blinova at No. 1.
The 'Cats returned to action at 5 p.m., collecting another 7-0 win for the day over Chicago State.
With a forfeit at No. 3 and wins at No. 1 and No. 2, Northwestern gained the point for doubles. At No.1 Rheeya Doshi and Brooke Rischbieth defeated Mariya Kostyuk and Leshia Gadacz 6-1, and at No. 2 Nina Van Oost and Jillian Rooney beat Carynne Lloyd and Lorea Gamboa 6-3.
To add to the doubles win, Northwestern raked in 5 straight wins with another forfeit point at No. 6. To start, Rheeya Doshi breezed through two sets against Mariya Kostyuk at No. 1 winning 12 straight games for a clean score of 6-0, 6-0. Next to finish was No. 3 Alex Chatt, winning in two sets with 6-0, 6-2 to put the Wildcats up 4-0.
At No. 4, Brooke Rischbieth put down Carynne Lloyd 6-0, 6-1, and Lee Or finished off the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lorea Gamboa at No. 2 to put the 'Cats up 7-0.
Next Saturday Northwestern is back with a match at home against Harvard at the Combe Tennis Center on January 21st at 11 a.m.. The annual meet the team lunch will take place at the completion of the match.
