Match Notes

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will host the Michigan State Spartans at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Friday night in the second of four straight home conference dual meets.

The Wildcats are searching for their first conference win after a narrow 20-16 loss against Purdue last Sunday when both teams won five bouts each.

Michigan State is also looking for its first Big Ten victory and is 2-4 on the season. The team's two Big Ten losses have come against No. 18 Minnesota and No. 3 Iowa.

The Spartans bring two ranked wrestlers with them to Evanston. Freshman Drew Hughes is ranked as high as No. 14 by TheOpenMat.com at 165 pounds and won Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 20, the first MSU wrestler to do so since 2012. Junior Javier Gasca is ranked as high as No. 17 by TrackWrestling at 141 pounds and is 17-5 this season.

Northwestern has two ranked wrestlers of its own heading into Friday's tilt. Senior Jacob Berkowitz is ranked as high as No. 15 by TrackWrestling at 197 pounds and boasts a 17-5 record. Redshirt-junior Mitch Sliga is ranked as high as No. 20 by TheOpenMat.com at 184 pounds and owns a 13-4 record.

Michigan State leads the all-time series between the programs 26-20, having won the last meeting 19-15 in East Lansing, Mich. on Jan. 31, 2016. Northwestern last won on Jan. 25, 2013, by an 18-15 score.
