MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Jeffrey Hopson tallied his second goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute to cut Marquette's lead to 2-1, but the Golden Eagles answered with a pair of late goals to top Northwestern, 4-1, Monday night at Valley Fields.
The result sends Northwestern to 1-3-0 on the season, while Marquette improves to 3-1-0.
Marquette had four different players register a goal in the victory. The Golden Eagles' first tally came in the 18th minute when Toby Howell put a header to the back of the net on a cross from Matin Alba.
The Golden Eagles controlled the contest in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Northwestern by a 7-3 margin.
Northwestern's best chance in the opening stanza came on an Elo Ozumba shot in the 16th minute that just went wide of the net.
After allowing an early second-half goal that put Marquette ahead, 2-0, Northwestern began to apply pressure on the Golden Eagles' backline. The Wildcats tallied seven of their 10 shots in the second half.
Momentum shifted in the 73rd minute in Northwestern's favor when a through ball to Ozumba pulled Marquette's keeper to the top of the box and he was called for a red card in the penalty box. Hopson placed his penalty shot into the top right corner of the net to get Northwestern on the board and make it a one score game.
The Golden Eagles played the remaining 17 minutes with 10 men on the field, due to the ejection, but were able to score a pair of short-handed goals in the 85th and 87th minutes to win by a final of 4-1.
Northwestern will now turn its focus to league play when it makes the trip to Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 9, to play the Buckeyes in both team's Big Ten Conference opener.
