Northwestern Opens Big Ten Play at Ohio State

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern men's soccer team will open up Big Ten Conference play this weekend when it travels to Ohio State to play the Buckeyes on Friday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. CT at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

NORTHWESTERN NOTES
After opening the season with a 2-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast at the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, Northwestern has dropped three-straight matches, including two by one goal.
 
Senior captains Brandon Medina and Jeffrey Hopson lead Northwestern with four points each, both scoring goals on a pair of penalty kicks.
 
Junior goalkeeper Francisco Tomasino has started every match this season and is 1-3-0 overall with 12 saves and a 2.02 goals-against average. 
 
Entering Friday's match with the Buckeyes, Hopson has started 46 consecutive games and had played in 62 contests. Fellow senior Nathan Dearth has shared in Hopson's consistency, having started and played in every game dating back to the 2014 season.
 
Since 2007, Northwestern has the best average finish (2.889) in the Big Ten standings - Stat does not include Rutgers and Maryland since new arrivals in the Big Ten.
 
OHIO STATE NOTES
The Buckeyes started the season ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA preseason poll, but are still in search of their first victory, posting a 0-4 overall mark to begin the season. Three of Ohio State's losses have come in overtime.
 
Nate Kohl has Ohio State's lone goal of the campaign, which came against Oregon State on Sept. 5. Goalkeeper Parker Siegfried has started and played in all four matches this season.  He has 13 saves and a 1.39 goals-against average.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Last season, Northwestern topped the Buckeyes, 2-1, at Toyota Park. Joey Callistri scored a pair of goals in the game to lead the Wildcats to a victory.
 
Northwestern has only lost once in its last five meetings with the Buckeyes.
 
HEAD COACH – TIM LENAHAN
Head coach Tim Lenahan enters his 16th season at the helm of the Wildcats. During his tenure, he has taken the program to the NCAA Tournament on nine occasions and won the Big Ten regular season twice (2011, 2012) in addition to one conference tournament title in 2011. Last season, Lenahan earned his 150th victory as NU's head coach when the 'Cats topped Penn State, 2-1, on Nov. 11, 2015.
