EVANSTON, Ill. -- Pascale Massey scored two goals and Lindsay von der Luft made a save on the final play of the game as the 11th-ranked Northwestern field hockey team defeated its second top-10 opponent of the weekend, topping No. 6 Maryland 3-2 at Lakeside Field Sunday afternoon.
Coming off a 5-3 win over fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Penn State on Friday, the Wildcats were riding high and the hosts were able to get off to a good start against the Terrapins.
Just under two minutes into the match, Isabel Flens got off a hard shot that was saved by Sarah Holliday, but Massey was there to put home the rebound and Northwestern jumped out to a 1-0 advantage.
The tally was not exactly a precursor of things to come in the first half as neither team was able to muster many quality scoring chances. In fact, there were just six total shots over the opening 35 minutes of play with NU recording four and Maryland posting two. The lone penalty corner of the period belonged to the Wildcats who took the 1-0 advantage into the intermission.
Maryland came out the aggressors to begin the second half and the Terrapins eventually got the equalizer at 45:29 when Emma Rissinger scored on a deflection of Carrie Hanks' feed from the top of the circle.
Northwestern got the lead back at 52:55 when Dutch teammates Isabel Flens and Saar de Breij teamed up for a beautiful goal. With de Breij streaking into the game as a substitution, Flens connected with the freshman who finished past Holliday for her fourth goal of the season to make it 2-1.
However, Maryland responded just under two minutes later when Welma Luus scored on a reverse-stick shot off a pass from Grace Balsdon to tie the game for a second time.
The deciding goal came at 59:13 when Massey drove endline and managed to jam the ball past Holliday at the post for her fourth goal of the year to put Northwestern in front for good.
Maryland earned one final great chance as it picked up a penalty corner in the final minute of regulation. The clock eventually expired leaving the game to be decided by the final try. Balsdon's drag sailed to the upper right corner of the cage, but von der Luft extended to knock the ball away, securing the hard-fought win for Northwestern.
Northwestern finished with a 10-9 edge in shots while Maryland had a 3-2 edge in corners. Six saves were made by von der Luft to earn the win in goal.
The Wildcats return to action at 1:30 p.m. Central time Friday at Rutgers.
