LANCASTER, Pa. -- Redshirt freshman Kirsten Mansfield scored her first collegiate goal with no time remaining in regulation, giving No. 16 Northwestern a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind victory over No. 8 Boston College at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex.
The first game of the B1G/ACC Cup couldn't have been any more dramatic. With the game knotted following Elena Curley's 63rd-minute goal, Dominique Masters earned a penalty corner with one second remaining in the contest. With the clock expired, Northwestern was allowed to play out the corner. Boston College was unable to gain possession of the ball without committing a foul as the Wildcats earned a total of four consecutive corners with all zeros on the clock.
The fourth time proved to be a charm as Mansfield scored off an assist from Isabel Flens, giving NU the dramatic victory.
"We needed all 70 minutes today and we battled against a talented Boston College team," said Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs. "We worked very hard and got a well-deserved result. It was great timing for Kirsten's first collegiate goal."
The two teams stood toe-to-toe for most of the contest but it was the Eagles who tallied first as Brittany Sheehan scored goal at 22:03 to put BC in front. The Wildcats got things going following the opposition's tally, out-shooting Boston College 5-0 over the remainder of the opening stanza -- including putting three on goal -- but the Eagles carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Northwestern continued to put the pressure on throughout the second half as they pushed for the equalizer, but the 'Cats were still chasing a goal as the clock ticked under eight minutes remaining. However, NU finally got the tying goal at 62:34 when Curley deflected home a feed from Flens off a corner for her second goal of the season.
Boston College recorded a pair of late shots with under two mintues left in the second half, including one that forced Lindsay von der Luft to make a save, but it appeared the game would head to sudden-victory overtime. Northwestern had one last push in it, though, as Masters created the last-second scoring opportunity that eventually paid off.
NU finished the contest with a commanding 11-1 advantage in penalty corners as well as a 21-15 edge in shots. In goal, von der Luft made six saves to earn the victory.
The Wildcats (2-1) return to action at 10 a.m. Central time Sunday when they face off against fourth-ranked Duke.
