Northwestern Rallies But Falls to No. 4 Duke in OT, 3-2

9/4/2016 12:10:00β€―PM | Field Hockey

LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 16 Northwestern rallied late in regulation to force overtime, but fourth-ranked Duke got a goal in the extra session to outlast the Wildcats, 3-2, Sunday afternoon as part of the B1G/ACC Cup at Spooky Nook Sports.
Β
Lindsay von der Luft made a career-high 13 saves in goal for the 'Cats.

"We battled another great team today," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We executed in the critical moments but just came up short. We need to continue to grow and get better as we get ready for our series next weekend and for Big Ten play."
Β
The Wildcats came out the aggressors in the contest and NU was rewarded with a penalty corner a minute into the match. The 'Cats recorded a trio of shots on goal, but Duke goalkeeper Sammi Steele was up to the challenge each time.
Β
However, Northwestern kept the pressure on, earning two more corners in the opening three minutes of play. The third chance paid off as Pascale Massey deflected home a feed from Dominique Masters for her first goal of the season at the 2:44 to mark to give the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead.
Β
The Blue Devils picked up their intensity following NU's early goal, recording three shots on goal over the next four minutes of play, but von der Luft stopped all three attempts. Duke would eventually managed to tie the game at 10:44 thanks to a goal off a penalty corner of their own. Alyssa Chillano tallied the goal off assists from Ainsley Gill and Margaux Paolino.
Β
The match remained tied until the closing minutes of the opening half when Heather Morris gathered a loose ball in the circle and put home her fourth goal of the year to help give Duke a 2-1 lead at the break.
Β
Northwestern pushed for the tying goal throughout the second half but continued to find itself down by a goal as the clock ticked under five minutes remaining. Fuchs opted to pull von der Luft from goal for an extra attacker with 4:23 remaining in regulation.
Β
Eva van Agt and Massey both recorded shots on goal but Steele made saves on both shots to maintain Duke's lead. Soon after Massey's shot, Charlotte Vaziri was able to connect with Saar de Breij on a long pass and the freshman finished past Steele to tie the game with just 1:20 remaining for her first collegiate goal.
Β
The match eventually went to overtime where von der Luft was forced to make a save on a breakaway 38 seconds into the period. The senior would go on to make two more saves before Duke earned a penalty corner that it converted on at 75:53, giving the Blue Devils the hard-fought win. Chillano was credited with the goal off an assist from Paolino.

Duke finished with a 22-14 edge in shots while NU had a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Β
Northwestern (2-2) returns to action at noon Friday when it opens its home season against Ball State at Lakeside Field.
