Northwestern Drops Big Ten Home Opener in Overtime

9/14/2016 10:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern dropped a 2-1 contest to Wisconsin in overtime on Wednesday night at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.

Elo Ozumba scored Northwestern's lone goal in the 14th minute and Francisco Tomasino made a career-high seven saves in the effort.

The loss moves Northwestern to 1-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play, while Wisconsin remains unbeaten (2-0-0) in Big Ten matches and improves to 3-1-1 overall.

The Badgers took control of the game in the opening stages, and peppered shots at the Northwestern goal in the first ten minutes. Francisco Tomasino was up to the challenge and made three saves in the first half.

Northwestern generated one scoring chance in the 14th minute and Ozumba made sure that it counted. Mike Roberge worked the ball on the right wing to Camden Buescher, who swung a cross from 30 yards out that found the head of Ozumba. The striker guided a powerful header to the near post for his first goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Wisconsin ended the first half with nine shots to Northwestern's one, but the Wildcats' ability to capitalize on their only chance gave them a halftime cushion.

The visitors resumed their pursuit of an equalizer in the second half and threw everything they had at the Northwestern backline. Tomasino made his fourth save of the season ten minutes in to keep the Badgers off the scoreboard.

Wisconsin finally found a breakthrough in the 64th minute when Mark Segbers made a darting run down the right hand side before playing a through ball to Christopher Mueller. The Wisconsin striker's one-time low drive found the back of the net at the far post to make it 1-1.
F. Tomasino made an outstanding save on a wide-open shot in the 72nd minute to keep the game deadlocked at one apiece.

Both teams searched for a late winner, but there were no clear-cut opportunities. F. Tomasino made two more saves in the latter stages to reach seven during the 90 minutes.

Less than three minutes into overtime, Wisconsin grabbed the golden goal to win the game, 2-1. Mike Catalano played a one-two with Mark Segbers on the right edge of Northwestern's box. Catalano ran around Segber's pass in the box and slotted home his first goal of the season at the far post.

The Wildcats ended the game with five shots and two on goal. The team is back in action on Sunday at Indiana at 1 p.m. CT.
