EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Isabel Flens notched a hat trick leading a thoroughly dominant charge by No. 17 Northwestern as the Wildcats crushed Colgate 8-0 Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
NU finished with a remarkable 46-1 edge in shots in the contest and a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners. Coupled with a 5-0 win over Ball State on Friday, Northwestern out-scored its two weekend opponents 13-0 while out-shooting them 69-1.
The Wildcats' eight goals are their most in a game since a 9-3 victory over Dartmouth on Sept. 5, 2014. It's the team's largest margin of victory since an 8-0 win over Kent State on Oct. 7, 2012.
Northwestern (4-2) peppered Colgate goalie Maria Krull right from the start, continually putting shots on goal. The Wildcats eventually were able to get one by Krull when Elena Curley scored her fourth goal of the year off a penalty corner at 14:45. Sophia Miller and Kirsten Mansfield were credited with assists on the play.
The lead grew to 2-0 at 19:15 thanks to another penalty corner. Mansfield tipped home a feed from Flens for her second goal of the season. Despite holding a decisive advantage throughout the first half, the lead remained a precarious two goals until the closing seconds of the stanza.
On the Wildcats' 12th corner of the half, Dominique Masters ripped a shot past Krull to give NU a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Miller and Mansfield posted assists on the play as Northwestern out-shot the Raiders 27-1 over the opening 35 mintues of play and had a 12-1 advantage in corners.
The 'Cats put the game away with five goals in the second half. Puck Pentenga notched another goal for NU off a corner at 47:21 before Flens scored her first of the game off an assist from Maggie Fitzgerald at 51:32. Flens got her second tally of the day just under six minutes later before completing the hat trick at 59:43.
Northwestern wrapped the scoring at 68:40 when Katie Yeatts scored her first collegiate goal off Lily Gandhi's assist.
The Wildcats return to action Friday when they open Big Ten play at Ohio State.
