EVANSTON, Ill. -- After opening the season with three-straight road wins at VCU, James Madison and DePaul, the No. 24 Northwestern Wildcats will return to Evanston for their debut at the newly renovated Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The 'Cats will host Indiana State on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. CT and Colorado State on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. CT to kick off a six-game homestand.
FRIDAY NIGHT GIVEAWAY: Early arriving fans will receive an exclusive mini soccer ball, commemorating the 'Cats appearance in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Both matches will be streamed, courtesy of Studio N Productions.
Northwestern (2-0-0) began the season with a 1-0 overtime victory against Virginia Commonwealth behind Brenna Lovera's game-winning goal in the 98th minute. The Wildcats' offense then turned it on in a 3-0 win over tournament host James Madison with Lovera, Maddy Lucas and Grace Orndorff all scoring second-half goals. Defense was the theme for opening weekend as Northwestern kept both opponents off of the scoreboard. Junior goalie Lauren Clem notched her 23rd and 24th career shutouts in the victories and now is one shutout shy of setting a program record.
The Wildcats continued their tear with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over crosstown rival DePaul. Lovera found the equalizer in the 78th minute before Kassidy Gorman logged her first goal of the year with the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.
NU was slated to play Kentucky on Aug. 28, but the game was cancelled due to weather after 45 minutes of action.
The hot start also propelled the 'Cats into the national rankings. The club will head into the weekend ranked No. 24 in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will face Indiana State for the first time in program history. The Sycamores started the year with a 2-2-0 overall record, kicking off the year with a 3-0 win over Western Illinois. ISU tallied its second win against Akron, but lost matches to Louisville and IUPUI.
The #B1GCats continue its homestand against CSU on Sunday. The two teams will face off for just the second time in program history as the Wildcats defeated the Rams 2-1 just last season. Colorado State currently owns a 2-2-0 overall record thanks to a pair of wins against Denver and SIUE.
