Lauren Clem Sets Program Record as No. 24 NU Tops Indiana State, 2-0
9/1/2016 9:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
By David Herder, Northwestern Athletics
EVANSTON, Ill. -- It was an historic night at Lanny & Sharon Martin Stadium, where No. 24 Northwestern did not concede a shot for the first time in program history and Lauren Clem recorded a program record with her 25th career shutout as Northwestern felled the Indiana State Sycamores, 2-0.
The Wildcats stayed a perfect 4-0-0 on the season, while Indiana State fell to 2-3-0.
Northwestern started the first half attacking southward with the strong lake wind at their back, and immediately went to work. The Wildcats kept the ball in the attacking half for the first five minutes of the game, with the Sycamores making just a handful of attacking forays thereafter.
The Wildcats found early success down the left flank, manufacturing their first good chance just two minutes into action. Maddy Lucas crossed in to Brenna Lovera, whose near-post header skimmed over the bar. In the 18th minute, Nandi Mehta almost found her first goal of the season, collecting the ball just outside the 18-yard box and bending a shot past the far post.
The script stayed the same in the second half as Northwestern continued chopping away at the Sycamores, needing just 40 seconds to work a shot on target. Minutes later, Lovera had Northwestern's best chance of the game so far as a deflected shot fell to her feet near the penalty spot. The sophomore ripped a shot over the goalkeeper's head and rattled the crossbar.
Lucas found the crossbar in the 74th minute as her left footed curler came straight down off the bar and bounced in to break the deadlock. Her second goal of the season continued the Wildcat's second-half themed success, with all eight of their goals this season coming after the break.
Kassidy Gorman put the game away in the 85th minute, adeptly tucking in a Maria Fayuelle assist to double the #B1GCats advantage. It was Fayuelle's third assist of the season.
Northwestern ended the game with 25 shots and 12 on goal, both more than double the previous season highs.
The Wildcats stay at home for their next five matchups, next hosting Colorado State on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m.
