Northwestern Christens Martin Stadium with a Victory

8/26/2016 10:27:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — History was made in Evanston on Friday night.

Northwestern University dedicated Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, and Chap and Ethel Hutcheson Field on Friday evening as the Wildcats topped Florida Gulf Coast, 2-1, in the first soccer game played at the new lakefront complex.

With the Martin and Hutcheson families in attendance, senior Brandon Medina scored a pair of penalty kicks to christen the stadium and the 2016 season with a victory.

Florida Gulf Coast tallied its lone goal of the match on a penalty kick from Albert Ruiz in the 72nd minute.

Francisco Tomasino earned the start in net for the Wildcats and racked up four saves, including a turn away in the 63rd minute off a FGCU free kick from 20 yards out that got passed Northwestern's wall of defenders.

Medina, who was playing in his first game since the 2014 season after missing last year due to an injury, took the first penalty kick in the 22nd minute after FGCU committed the foul inside the box. Medina buried his PK into the left corner, past the diving keeper.

"Playing in the new Martin Stadium was an incredible experience," said Medina. "The new turf and the video board were amazing additions. We, as a program, are very thankful for the Martin's generosity. It was a really special night opening the season with them present and I am glad we could get the win. I couldn't be happier being back and wearing Northwestern's jersey. I've been waiting for this night for over a year and a half. The two goals were just part of a collective team effort, and I'm happy to help the team in anyway possible. It was a great start to the season"

Northwestern took the 1-0 lead into the break.

The Wildcats were able to build on their lead quickly in the second half as FGCU committed another penalty in the box in the 47th minute. Medina made good on his second attempt to build the 2-0 lead.

Northwestern registered five shots on goal, including two from forward Elo Ozumba. Freshman Ty Seager posted the 'Cats other shot on target.

The Wildcats will turn right back around and welcome Santa Clara to Martin Stadium on Monday, Aug. 29 for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
