Late Penalty Kick Gives Northwestern its First Loss

8/29/2016 8:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern suffered its first setback of the young season, falling, 1-0, to Santa Clara on Monday night at Martin Stadium thanks to a penalty-kick goal by the Broncos in the 84th minute.

The result moves Northwestern to 1-1-0 overall, while Santa Clara (1-1-0) picked up its first victory of 2016.

Santa Clara was awarded the game-winning penalty kick in the 84th minute after a foul was called on Northwestern in the box. The Broncos' Edson Cardona put his shot just past a diving Francisco Tomasino for the game's lone goal.

Both goals Northwestern has surrendered this season have come off penalty kicks.

Getenet Tuji came off the bench for Northwestern and put two shots on target, including a header in the 43rd minute that was bound for the back of the net until a Santa Clara defender kicked it out of bounds before it could cross the goal line.

The Wildcats had offensive opportunities, tallying a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. All four of Northwestern's corners came in the second half.

Santa Clara outshot Northwestern, 10-7.

Northwestern will return to action on Friday, Sept. 2, when it hosts Denver at Martin Stadium. Kick is set for 3 p.m. CT and the Big Ten Network will broadcast the contest.
