EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern men's basketball's team recently participated at the University's annual Relay for Life, benefitting the American Cancer Society, for the 14th consecutive year and raised a total of $9,783.
Relay for Life is an overnight community walk to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Northwestern's Relay for Life raised over $93,000 for this year's event. The basketball program's raised total of $9,783 was the second highest out of any fundraising team and was the highest student-group total at the event.
"It's a time when the student-athletes get to do something special for a great organization that's so invested at Northwestern," said assistant to the head coach Jen Marr, who coordinates the team's involvement at the event and its fundraising campaign.
In addition to walking laps with cancer survivors, the basketball team annually hosts a knockout tournament with other participants at the event. The tournament helps to provide an energy boost during the overnight event and allows participants a chance to compete against some of their favorite Wildcats.
"The guys really come together for this event," said Marr. "Our student-athletes are excited to be involved in such a great cause that benefits so many people. It's something they look forward to every year."
The team used a strong social media presence to raise money, with individual student-athletes also using their personal accounts to get involved. The majority of the money raised came from the team's booster club, with current and previous donors combining to post the impressive total.
Marr, whose own aunt is a cancer survivor of 15 years, spoke about how personal the event is for many of the participants and what it means to be involved with a great organization.
"It's something very personal for a lot of people," said Marr. "We're all doing something for this cause and to further cancer research."
