EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern received more good news for the postseason as juniors Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire were selected for the NCAA singles tournament.
Strong Kirchheimer was selected as the first alternate for the tournament.
"Konrad, Sam and Strong have worked incredibly hard this year and throughout their careers to become three of the best college players in the Big Ten and the country," head coach Arvid Swan said. "I am thrilled that Konrad and Sam have been accepted into the NCAA singles tournament and that Strong is the first alternate."
Zieba is the No. 20 ranked player in the nation. He is 21-8 this year with 14 wins over ranked opponents. Zieba played the majority of the season at No. 1 for the Wildcats and posted a 14-6 record in dual match play.
Shropshire is 18-8 so far in 2016 and is ranked No. 40 nationally by the ITA. He boasts 10 wins versus ranked foes and posted a perfect 7-0 mark in Big Ten play.
Kirchheimer is having one of the best individual seasons of any Northwestern player ever with a 28-3 record. His .903 winning percentage is the second-highest single-season mark in school history.
All three Wildcats were awarded First-Team All-Big Ten honors after leading Northwestern to the best season in program history.
The national singles and doubles tournaments will run from May 25-30 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., immediately following the team tournament.
