Two 'Cats Earn Prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America Award

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern graduate student-athletes Andrea Filler and Amy Letourneau have been named 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans, the organization announced today.
The prestigious honor is bestowed upon student-athletes in at least their sophomore seasons of competition who have a grade point average of 3.30 or above. Voting criteria takes into account on-field and classroom accomplishments. Each member of the duo was elected to the Academic All-America third team.
Filler and Letourneau represent the seventh and eighth Academic All-Americans in Northwestern program history, while their awards are the 12th and 13th for the Wildcats overall. Chinazo Opia (1989-90), Garland Cooper (2006-07) and Marisa Bast (2013-14) each earned the honor twice.
2016 marks just the second time in NU history that two Wildcats have made the Academic All-America teams in the same season. Opia (first team) and Kim Metcalf (third team) accomplished the feat in 1990.
Filler transferred to Northwestern from Boston College in the fall of 2013 as an academic junior with sophomore athletic eligibility. She earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies in 2015 and currently is pursuing a master's degree in sports administration.
In just three years with the Wildcats, Filler ranks third in school history in doubles (40), fourth in slugging (.693), sixth in batting (.351), seventh in RBIs (159) and on-base percentage (.433), eighth in total bases (316) and ninth in home runs (34). The two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection had one of the finest slugging seasons in program history in 2016, ranking third in home runs (16), fifth in doubles (14) and RBIs (59) and seventh in slugging (.739).
Filler has been invited to an open tryout with the Chicago Bandits of National Professional Fastpitch in the hopes of furthering her softball career this summer.
Though also a fifth-year graduate student, Letourneau has been in the Northwestern program for five seasons compared to Filler's three. A talented freshman who famously shut out No. 6 seed Texas in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, Letourneau won the Big Ten batting title at the plate and strikeout crown in the circle during an All-Big Ten and All-Region sophomore campaign in 2013.
Injuries slowed her down in 2014-15, but also allowed her to return with a fifth year of eligibility this past season, when she hit .325 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs while going 15-11 in the circle with a 2.87 ERA. Her name litters the Northwestern career record book where she ranks among the top-six all-time in 11 different statistical categories including wins (63), strikeouts (648), home runs (44) and RBIs (165).
In the classroom, Letourneau earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 2015 and currently is enrolled in a post-baccalaureate certificate program in finance. She will begin a job with WH Trading, a Chicago-based trading firm, after graduation next month.
