EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 38 Northwestern notched its second straight 7-0 win while improving to 6-0 in Big Ten play as it rolled past Purdue Friday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats had to battle down to the wire to take the doubles point. NU surged in front with a convincing 6-2 win by the No. 2 team of Alicia Barnett and Brooke Rischbieth as they defeated Marta Ruedas-Burgos and Krisztina Kapitany.
Purdue picked up a 6-4 victory at No. 1, leaving the doubles point to be determined by the contest at No. 3. Northwestern's pairing of Jillian Rooney and Erin Larner forced a tiebreaker with Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila before eventually posting a 7-6 (4) triumph.
In singles play, the Wildcats captured the first set in four of the six matches to seize the early momentum.
One opening set that didn't look like it would go NU's way was at No. 1 where 91st-ranked Larner trailed 5-3 and faced three set points against Robinson's serve. However, Larner rallied back to force a tiebreaker that she eventually won, 7-3.
No. 45 Maddie Lipp was the first player to capture a victory as she rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kapitany at No. 2. Following her early struggles, Larner dominated Robinson the rest of the way, notching a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win to put Northwestern up 3-0 in the match.
The remaining four matches on the courts were up for grabs, leaving the contest still to be decided. However, Barnett eventually clinched the match for NU by taking down Djokovic 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Moments later, Rischbieth closed out a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Escribens at No. 6.
All that was left to be determined was if Northwestern could record its second straight shutout. The 'Cats inched closer with Jillian Rooney's comeback from a set down at No. 5 to defeat Ruedas-Burgos 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Chatt eventually sealed the 7-0 win for the hosts by defeating Davila 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Northwestern returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts No. 68 Indiana.
