EVANSTON, Ill.  – No. 38 Northwestern remained in a first-place tie in the Big Ten standings, improving to 7-0 in league play with a 6-1 win over No. 68 Indiana on Sunday at Combe Tennis Center.

The Wildcats had to scratch and claw to earn the double point and seize the early lead. At No. 3, the team of Jillian Rooney and Erin Larner had very little trouble with Madison Appel and Danielle Wolf as the Wildcats' duo posted a 6-2.

However, the two remaining matches on the courts were up for grabs. Alicia Barnett and Brooke Rischbieth suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith, leaving doubles to be determined by the matchup at No. 1.

The 25th-ranked duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp were down a break at 5-2 against Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean but managed to break back and eventually force a decisive tiebreaker. In a match that took nearly an hour, the 'Cats dominated the tiebreaker -- 7-3 -- to put the hosts up 1-0 heading into singles play.

The Hoosiers continued to battle Northwestern into singles action. The Wildcats managed to win all six first sets, though two of the sets went to a tiebreaker and two others were decided by two games.

In the lone match of the day that wasn't closely contested, Lipp – ranked No. 54 – dominated McLean at No. 3 to the tune of a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Northwestern clinched the match moments later thanks to victories at Nos. 2 and 5. At the No. 2 spot, Barnett pulled away from Appel for a 7-5, 6-2 win while Rooney got past Wolf 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

Erin Larner increased the Wildcats' lead to 5-0 with a strong second-set performance in a battle of ranked players. The 91st-ranked NU sophomore defeated 90th-ranked Gutierrez 7-6 (3), 6-0.

The Hoosiers managed to get on the board with a win at No. 4 where Smith came back to knock off Chatt 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 before Rischbieth wrapped up the match by netting a tight 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Schmider.

Northwestern returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Central time Friday when it travels to Penn State.
