UIC Sets Back Northwestern in Non-Conference Action

4/5/2016 6:47:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern ended its five-game homestand Tuesday with a 7-0 loss to UIC at the new Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats are now 7-22 overall, while the win improved the Flames to 11-16 on the season.

Senior Jake Stolley started the game for the Wildcats and threw 2.0 innings with no earned runs and a strikeout. Danny Katz (1-1), who struck out a pair of batters in two innings of work, took his first loss of the season after four unearned runs came around to score while he was on the bump.

UIC pitched the game by committee, using six pitchers over nine innings. Reid Birlingmair (1-2) earned his first win of the year after pitching the fourth inning.

Senior Zach Jones led Northwestern at the dish with a 2-for-4 performance. Matt Hopfner and Joe Hoscheit also got into the hit column for Northwestern by each tallying a single.

The Wildcats threatened early in the first inning when Jones got into scoring position at second base with one away, but the lineup left the senior stranded on second. In the third inning, Northwestern racked up three consecutive singles and almost scored when Jones was barely tagged out on a plate at the plate.

UIC got on the board in the fourth inning after an error with two outs allowed Conor Philbin to reach first. Philbin eventually scored before Scott Ota batted in two more runs and Thomas Norton knocked in another to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Hopfner saved a run with his arm as he threw out Brandon Gibis at the plate from right field. The 'Cats couldn't escape the inning, however, before the Flames tacked on two runs to make it 6-0.

UIC tallied an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Friday as they kick off a three-game series in Lincoln, Nebraska, against the Cornhuskers at 6:35 p.m. CT.
