Mason Strikes Out Six, 'Cats Edged by Huskers

4/8/2016 10:09:00 PM | Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. — Senior Reed Mason pitched 6.1 innings and matched a season-high with six strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as Nebraska held on to edge Northwestern, 3-2, in the series opener at Hawks Field.

Northwestern (7-23, 1-6 B1G) scored both of its runs in the top of the first, while Nebraska (21-9, 6-1 B1G) managed to bring runners across in the first, second and fourth innings.

Mason (2-3) settled into a grove after allowing the pair of runs in the opening two frames. The left-hander retired the last eight batters he faced and only allowed two hits over the last 3.1 innings he pitched.

Nebraska's third run that came in the fourth inning was unearned.

Garrett King (4-1) earned the victory for the Huskers after going 6.0 IP with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed, while Chad Luensmann worked the ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Northwestern's offense on Friday night came from the middle of its lineup. The Wildcats' three, four, five and six hitters combined for all seven of the team's hits. Matt Hopfner led the 'Cats with a 3-for-4 night at the dish and Connor Lind reached base three times after going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Ryan Boldt and Jake Meyers each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Cornhuskers.

After Jack Dunn drew a walk in the first inning, Zach Jones singled back up the middle to set up Hopfner. The Wildcats' right fielder took a pitch the opposite way and found a hole on the right side of the infield to score Dunn and make it 1-0.

Joe Hoscheit hit into a fielder's choice in the next at-bat to score Z. Jones from third and give the #B1GCats their early two-run lead.

Northwestern had runners into scoring position in the four different innings, but couldn't get the tying run across home plate.

Tommy Bordignon entered in the seventh inning for the Wildcats and went 1.2 innings with a strikeout and only surrendered a hit.

Northwestern will be back in action tomorrow against Nebraska at 2:05 p.m. CT. RHP Dan Kubiuk is slated to pitch for the 'Cats.
