EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell, 8-0, to Minnesota on Sunday afternoon to close out a three-game series at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
Joe Schindler (1-1) started for Northwestern, pitched 4.0 innings, and earned the loss. He allowed no hits in the first three innings and picked up five strikeouts. Pete Hofman pitched two innings of relief, before Tommy Bordignon finished off the final three frames. The three pitchers combined for ten strikeouts on the day.
Toby Anderson (5-0) earned the win for Minnesota after pitching a complete game, where he allowed five hits and struck out four.
After three scoreless innings, Minnesota took the lead in the fourth inning when Austin Athmann hit a two-run home run to left field. Alex Boxwell also scored on a Micah Coffey RBI single later in the inning to make it 3-0.
The Gophers doubled their lead the next inning after Dan Motl scored and Athmann hit another two-run home run to left field to go ahead 6-0.
The 'Cats let up two more runs in the eighth inning after two wild pitches. Both Boxwell and Coffey scored from third to give Minnesota an 8-0 lead.
Connor Lind led Northwestern at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. Willie Bourbon and Mat Jones also added singles, while Matt Hopfner hit a double in the first inning.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next weekend in Bloomington, Indiana, to take on conference-foe Indiana for a three game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
