Northwestern Takes Down Nebraska, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 41 Northwestern improved to 4-0 in Big Ten play Saturday by posting a 5-2 victory over No. 75 Nebraska at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (6-8, 4-0 Big Ten) jumped out in front following doubles play despite switching up their lineups. The No. 3 pairing of Maddie Lipp and Jillian Rooney was the first team to finish as the duo took down Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox-Herr, 6-4. Just moments later, the No. 2 team of Erin Larner and Lee Or finished off Mary Hanna and Vasanti Shinde by the same score to put NU up 1-0 in the match.
In singles action, Alicia Barnett made short work of Lisa Andersson at No. 3, steamrolling her way to a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory to put the Wildcats up 2-0.
Jillian Rooney was able to record a dominating win of her own as her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Vasanti Shinde brought Northwestern within one point of taking the match.
Nebraska (17-3, 4-2 Big Ten) got on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Mackenna Maddox-Herr at No. 6 to make it 3-1. After a solid opening set, 81st-ranked Erin Larner found herself down 5-2 in the second to Maggy Lehmicke. However, the NU sophomore battled back to win the final five games of the set to earn a 6-4, 7-5 victory and clinch the match for the 'Cats.
The Cornhuskers got one more win from Katerina Matysova at No. 5, but Maddie Lipp finished off a comeback win by taking down Mary Hanna 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 to wrap up the victory for Northwestern.
The Wildcats return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Iowa.
