Northwestern Heads to Chicago State Tuesday

EVANSTON, Ill — Northwestern baseball will take a break from its homestand to head across town on Tuesday, April 19, for a mid-week clash with Chicago State at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Northwestern (9-27, 2-10 B1G) hosted Chicago State earlier this season (March 30) as part of the home opener at the new Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. The Wildcats cruised to an 11-5 victory over the Cougars in the first-ever game at the new ballpark.
Sophomore Jack Claeys belted a grand slam in the contest, while freshman second baseman Willie Bourbon went 4-for-4 at the dish with a home run. Freshman Danny Katz came out of the bullpen in the third inning against CSU and worked the next five frames to pick up the first victory of his career.
At the plate, Northwestern has a trio of players hitting at or above .300. Matt Hopfner, who ranks seventh in the Big Ten Conference with 51 hits this season, leads Northwestern with a .381 clip, while Connor Lind and Joe Hoscheit are batting .304 and .3000, respectively.
Chicago State (7-28, 1-11 WAC) enters the mid-week game with Northwestern riding a seven-game losing streak. The Cougars were swept over the weekend (April 15-17) at Sacramento State.
Andy Gertonson, who has played and started in every game this season, leads the team with a .288 batting average. Eleven of his 38 hits this season have gone for extra bases, including four home runs.
Junior Pete Hofman (0-3) will make his third start of the season for Northwestern. Hofman has racked up 14 strikeouts in 20.0 innings pitched.
Following the game at Chicago State, Northwestern will return home this weekend (April 22-24) to try and defend home turf against Big Ten-foe Minnesota in a three-game series.
