Northwestern improved to a 10-27 overall with the win, while Chicago State fell to 7-29 on the campaign.
Pete Hofman (1-3) got the start for the Wildcats and threw a perfect three up, three down first inning to go on and earn the victory. Northwestern used 10 pitchers in the contest, including Jake Stolley who earned his first save of the season after collecting the final two outs in the ninth.
Tyler Lass and Richard Fordon each tallied a pair of strikeouts in their respective innings of work.
Josh Willis (1-4) took the loss for the Cougars after tossing 4.1 innings and allowing four runs.
Ten different members of Northwestern's lineup recorded a hit on the evening. Ben Dickey and Matt Hopfner led the way for the 'Cats in the hit column with three hits apiece, while Jake Schieber and Connor Lind both posted a pair of knocks.
Hopfner, Lind and Jack Claeys each had a pair of RBIs.
With two away in the top half of the first, Joe Hoscheit stepped to the plate and ripped a line shot to the center field wall that scored Schieber from first base. Hoscheit was thrown out on the play trying to take third base.
Northwestern held the 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when Claeys took a pitch back through the right side with the bases loaded and two runs came around to score to extend the Wildcats' lead to 3-0.
Hopfner brought another run home for the Wildcats in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI-triple, before JR Reimer scored Hopfner in the next at-bat with a double down the left field line to make it 5-0.
Northwestern extended its lead to 9-0 with four runs in the top of the sixth, before Chicago State got onto the board for the first time in the bottom of the seventh inning with four runs.
The Wildcats picked up three insurance runs in the eighth inning to take a 12-6 lead into Chicago State's final two at-bats. The Cougars scored six runs in their final two chances and left the game-tying and game-winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Northwestern sets its sights towards the weekend (April 22-24) for when Minnesota comes to town for a Big Ten Conference series at the new Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
