Hot Bats Lead to 11-3 Win Over Nebraska

4/10/2016 6:19:00 PM | Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. — Six members of Northwestern's lineup recorded at least one RBI to help the Wildcats' offense explode for an 11-3 victory over Nebraska in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern (8-24, 2-7 B1G) was led at the plate by catcher Mat Jones, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, a double and his first-career home run. Connor Lind tallied four hits in the win to bring his weekend-hit total to nine.

Nebraska (22-10, 7-2 B11G) was outhit by Northwestern, 14-11, and left 13 runners on base.  Zack Engelken (0-2) earned the loss for the Huskers, who ended up using five different pitchers in the defeat.

Mack Rosman (1-0) was one of five pitchers to throw in the contest for the 'Cats. Rosman faced four batters in the fifth inning, picking up a strikeout and not allowing a hit, to go on to earn the first victory of his career.

Jake Stolley made the third start of his career and went 3.0 innings and only allowed three hits. Josh Davis, Pete Hofman and Joe Shindler also threw innings of relief. Hofman struck out a team-high two batters.

Freshman Willie Bourbon started the scoring off for the #B1GCats in the top of the second inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Bourbon took a pitch over the right field fence for his second-career home run.

Bourbon finished the day 1-for-2 with three walks, a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

M. Jones extend Northwestern's lead to 2-0 in the third when he singled home Ben Dickey from third base.

The Wildcats broke the game wide open in their next at-bats in the top half of the fourth when Dickey singled through the left side with the bases loaded to score one, before M. Jones brought home two more with a double down the left field line to make it 5-0.

Matt Hopfner, who had a 2-for-4 day at the plate, led the fifth inning off with a double and Joe Hoscheit singled him home in the next plate appearance.

Northwestern tallied a leadoff hit in five of the nine innings.

Lind scorched a double to left center later in the fifth to make it 7-0, before Jake Schieber tacked on another run with a fielder's choice RBI.

Northwestern held its 8-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth when the Huskers scored their first run of the ball game on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

M. Jones added more cushion to Northwestern's lead in the top of the ninth with his solo shot over the left field wall. His four RBIs were a career high.

The Huskers scratched across two more runs in their final at-bats to make the score final at 11-3.

For the 17th time this season, Northwestern tallied 10-or-more hits in a game. The Wildcats received support from the bottom half of the lineup. Northwestern's six, seven, eight and nine hitters combined for six hits, five runs and eight RBIs.

After two days off, Northwestern will host Bradley at the new Rocky and Berenice Milelr Park on Wednesday, April 13 at 3 p.m. CT.
