EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern won its third straight shutout and advanced to 4-0 in the Big Ten with a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center.
The 13th-ranked Wildcats improved to 18-2 overall. 15 of those wins, including Friday's, have come against teams in the ITA Top-60.
"Wisconsin is a very good team," head coach Arvid Swan said. "They had only lost one match this year, so we knew they would be good. I thought our guys brought good momentum in singles, so I was really pleased with the effort."
Chicago's Big Ten Team handed Wisconsin just its second loss of the season with dominant singles play.
Sam Shropshire got things rolling with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Josef Dodridge. It was the third win in a row and the second overall at the first position for the 42nd-ranked Shropshire. He was won six of his last seven.
Alp Horoz and Ben Vandixhorn also won in straight sets to put the match away for the Wildcats. Horoz was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 5, while Vandixhorn won in a second set tiebreak at No. 6 to clinch the team victory. The freshman Vandixhorn is 15-5 in his first collegiate season.
Two Wildcats were down to the final point to claim wins in their matches before both went unfinished. Konrad Zieba led 6-3, 5-4 and Fedor Baev was up 7-6 (6), 5-2, but both were denied wins in a race with Vandixhorn for the final team point.
"We want them to have a competitive nature," Swan said. "We want them to be the guy who gets the last point. The mentality we have to have is each guy is trying to get their point, not waiting for someone else to get it."
The doubles point came down to the wire with a close 6-4 win by Horoz and Mihir Kumar at No. 3 proving to be the difference for Northwestern. Wisconsin notched the first victory, 6-3, at No. 1 before Zieba and Shropshire knotted things at one with their own 6-3 win. Kumar and Horoz did the rest, improving to 13-3 with the win.
Northwestern is 17-0 this season when it wins the doubles point.
The Wildcats will seek to remain unbeaten in conference play when they take on Minnesota Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.
