Wildcats Score First But Fall to No. 20 Michigan

4/1/2016 3:35:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior right fielder Matt Hopfner hit his first home run of the year and Grant Peikert added a run and RBI, as well as his first double of the season Northwestern fell to 20th-ranked Michigan 10-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.

Northwestern dropped to 7-19, 1-3 B1G for the season, while Michigan moved to 18-5, 1-0 B1G.

Starter Reed Mason put in 3 innings, striking out four while letting up six hits and five earned runs.

Mason got the Wildcats off to a quick start, fanning a pair and allowing just one hit in the first two innings, while Hopfner's solo shot in the bottom of the first put the 'Cats ahead.

Michigan then began putting crooked numbers on the board, scoring three runs in both the third and fourth innings, and two more in the sixth to pull away. Their starter, Oliver Jaskie, didn't allow a hit between the fourth and sixth innings.

The Wildcats were able to jump on him in the seventh, as Willie Bourbon's double scored Ben Dickey and Connor Lind, cutting the deficit and making it a 9-4 game. Lind's single marked the 24th consecutive game in which he'd reached base, raising his batting average to .296 for the season.

Pete Hofman, Josh Davis, Justin Yoss and J.R. Reimer all made relief appearances, with Yoss putting in a strong two innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit. It was also the first appearance on the mound for Reimer this season.

The Wildcats play the Wolverines again at 3:30 p.m. to finish off the doubleheader, before capping off the series against Michigan with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
