EVANSTON, Ill. — Junior left fielder Joe Hoscheit homered and doubled in a run, but Northwestern fell to UIC, 11-2, Tuesday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The setback drops Northwestern to 4-9 on the season, while UIC now stands at 5-7.
Sophomore Richard Fordon (0-1) started the game for Northwestern and went 2.1 innings. He was credited with the loss after giving up up seven hits, seven runs and fanning one.
UIC's Trevor Lane (2-1) tossed 6.0 innings and struck out seven to earn his second victory of the season.
Northwestern got on the board in the first inning when Hoscheit took a pitch deep over the left field fence. The solo shot was the seventh of his career and third of the season.
With runners on first and second in the top of the third, Hoscheit lined a pitch off the left field fence to bring home Mat Jones from second and give Northwestern a 2-0 lead. Zach Jones was thrown out on the play trying to score from first.
UIC tallied eight hits and seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding five-run lead. Rob Calabrese went 2-for-4 for the Flames with a home run and three RBIs.
The Flames got a pair of insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to go on to win by the final of 11-2.
Connor Lind went 1-for-4 at the plate. His single extended his streak of reaching base to 11 consecutive games.
Tyler Lass, Mack Rosman and Evan Schreiber all threw innings of relief for Northwestern.
The Wildcats will board a plane tomorrow and head to San Diego State for a four-game series against the Aztecs that begins on Thursday, March 10.
