LAST TIME OUT
Playing a rescheduled weekday matchup, the Wildcats (4-9) fell to UIC on Tuesday, 11-2. A seven-run third inning by the homestanding Flames was enough to doom the 'Cats in the ballgame at Curtis Granderson Stadium. Junior left fielder Joe Hoscheit homered and doubled in a run in the game and freshman righty Tyler Lass threw 2.2 innings of no-run, three-hit baseball.
SNAPPED, BUT HE'S NOT DUNN
Freshman infielder Jack Dunn went hitless in the matchup versus UIC, snapping his nine-game hitting streak. However, the Alpharetta, Georgia, native is second on the Wildcats in hits with 17 — which is tied for fifth in the Big Ten. His .333 batting average is also second on the ballclub, trailing only Matt Hopfner (.375), who has the 12th-highest mark in the conference. Dunn also leads the team in runs scored with 10.
WAY TO GO, JOE
Joe Hoscheit was a bright spot in the loss at UIC, adding a double, a home run, and a pair of RBI. His performance moved him up in the Big Ten leaderboard, as he now is fourth in round-trippers (3) and second in total bases (30). He's also been a workhorse for the 'Cats, leading the Big Ten in at-bats.
ON THE BUMP
Sophomore Dan Kubiuk (0-0, 1.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season in the first game of the series. The Barrington, Illinois, native impressed in his first start this season, tossing four innings while allowing two hits and one unearned run. He has only allowed one run in nine innings of work so far this season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, senior southpaw Reed Mason (1-0, 1.98 ERA) will get the ball. His ERA is in the top 15 of Big Ten pitchers and this will be Mason's fourth start this season. He pitched five inning versus Boston College last weekend, surrendering only one earned run in his performance.
Junior lefty Cooper Wetherbee (0-1, 7.45 ERA) will be the starting pitcher in the nightcap on Friday. This will be his third start and fifth appearance of the season for the Wildcats.
Wrapping up the series, Tommy Bordignon (1-1, 2.38 ERA) will be on the mound for Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. This will be the first game that the sophomore righty will start for the squad, but has been dominant in his 11.1 innings of relief work this season. He has put in solid innings from the 'pen, including a four-inning hitless and runless performance versus Nevada and a 4.1-inning runless outing versus Pacific. He's tied for first on the team with 9 strikeouts, and has been efficient with his 0.54 WHIP.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
San Diego State is 2-10 this season, and the Aztecs are coming off a three-game series versus Fresno State in which they dropped a pair. Before winning the final game of the series, they had dropped seven games in a row.
