San Diego State Slugs Out a Victory Over Northwestern

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Despite scoring four runs in the top half of the eighth inning, Northwestern fell to San Diego State, 11-6, in the series opener Thursday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Northwestern (4-10) outhit San Diego State (3-10) with 12 hits to the Aztecs' 11 in the contest. The Wildcats left nine runners on base over the course of the game.
Jake Stolley (1-1) was the losing pitcher of record for Northwestern, while San Diego State's Chris Collins (1-0) came out of the bullpen and picked up his first victory of the campaign.
Dan Kubiuk made the start for the Wildcats and had a solid outing, The right-hander pitched 6.0 innings, striking out two and allowing one run on five hits.
Zach Jones and Matt Hopfner both went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Connor Lind and Ben Dickey each tallied a pair of RBIs. This was the seventh time this season that Hopfner has a racked up multiple hits in a game.
After allowing a run in the fourth inning, Northwestern managed to pull even in the top of the seventh when Dickey drove in Lind from third base on a groundball to the second baseman.
The 1-1 score would not last as the Aztecs put up seven runs in the bottom half of the seventh to take a commanding 7-1 advantage.
Northwestern kept SDSU within striking distance by scoring four runs in the following inning to make it an 8-5 game, but that is as close as the Wildcats would come to catching the Aztecs as they went on to score three insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth.
Freshman catcher Jake Garbarino pinch hit in the top of the ninth for Jack Claeys and collected an RBI-single for his first hit of his collegiate career.
Northwestern and San Diego State will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game beginning at 4 p.m. CT.
