'Cats and Flames Set for Cross-City Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will make the short trip across town tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8, for a mid-week matchup against UIC. First pitch against the Flames is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. CT at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
Northwestern (4-8) is coming off a tough weekend at the 2016 Snowbird Baseball Classic where it dropped games to Saint Leo, Boston College, Butler and Illinois State.
UIC (4-7) enters Tuesday's contest having lost six of its last seven games. The Flames traveled to Columbia, Mo., over the weekend and went 1-3 versus the Tigers. David Cronin leads the team with 17 hits on the campaign, while Ricardo Ramirez and Derrick Patrick each have tallied 15 knocks.
Northwestern's coaching staff has tabbed sophomore Richard Fordon for the start. It will be the first start of his career. The Floosmoor, Ill., native has come out of the bullpen on four occasions this season and has a 1.80 ERA.
The Wildcats have seen success at the plate this season. Currently, the team has a .290 batting average with 123 hits, which ranks fifth and second in the Big Ten Conference, respectively.
Junior Matt Hopfner and freshman Jack Dunn each have 17 hits this season, which places the duo second in that category among Big Ten hitters. Hopfner has tallied six multi-hit games this season, while Dunn is currently in the midst of a nine-game hit streak.
After the showdown with the Flames, Northwestern will board a plane and head to the West Coast for a four-game series at San Diego State that begins on Thursday, March 10.
