Wildcats Drop Finale of Snowbird Classic

3/6/2016 2:49:00 PM | Baseball

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Northwestern collected 10 hits on Sunday afternoon, but fell to Illinois State, 10-4, in its final game of the 2016 Snowbird Baseball Classic.

The loss drops Northwestern to 4-8 on the season and improves Illinois State to 4-6. Joe Hoscheit led the 'Cats at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, while Matt Hopfner and Connor Lind each had two base knocks.

The pair of hits gave Hopfner his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Lind's singles in the contest continued his streak of reaching base to 10 consecutive games.

Five additional Wildcats recorded hits in the ball game, including Jack Dunn whose single in the ninth inning extended his hit streak to a season-best nine games.

Cooper Wetherbee (0-1) started the game for the Wildcats and pitched 3.2 innings, striking out two. Freshman Danny Katz tossed 3.0 innings and only allowed four hits in the 15 batters he faced.

David Meade (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Illinois State.

After allowing a run in the first inning, Wetherbee settled in cruised through the next two frames.

The Wildcats' offense got started in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run, two-out rally.  Northwestern collected three runs on five hits, with two away, to take its first lead of the game, 3-1. Claeys, Lind and Bourbon each had an RBI during the rally.

Illinois State quickly retook the lead by scoring three runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth inning and an additional tally in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead, 5-3.

Northwestern would get a run back in the top of the seventh inning when Jack Dunn scored from third on a wild pitch. It was the last run the Wildcats would get on the afternoon.

Illinois State went on to score five insurance runs over the course of the seventh and eighth innings to finish with the 10-4 victory.

Northwestern will return to action on Tuesday, March 8, for a mid-week game against crosstown-foe UIC. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at UIC's Curtis Granderson Stadium.
