Saint Leo Scraps to Beat Northwestern, 5-3

3/4/2016 9:13:00 PM | Baseball

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Saint Leo scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and go on to beat Northwestern, 5-3, in the first game of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

Northwestern (4-5) was led by Jack Claeys and Matt Hopfner, who each tallied two hits in the game and now both have 11 hits on the season. Claeys also collected his fifth RBI of the year in the losing effort.

Saint Leo (9-7) had five different players record hits, including Michael Mann who led the Lions with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish.  Shane Haight came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and finished out the game to earn his second victory of the season.

Dan Kubiuk, who made his first collegiate start, went three-hitless innings before surrendering two knocks and a run in the top of the fourth. Justin Yoss pitched an inning and was credited with the loss.

The lone run that Kubiuk allowed in the fourth inning gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead, but Northwestern would answer in the bottom of the frame.

Joe Hoscheit reached first base on a walk and would be thrown out trying to take third on Hopfner's single to right field on the next play. Claeys took a pitch right back up the middle to bring Hopfner home from second and knot the game at 1-1.

Northwestern took its first lead of the game in the fifth inning on a balk call after Jack Dunn got into scoring position with his first-career double. The illegal move by Saint Leo's Andrew Cohen awarded Dunn, who was on third base following a wild pitch, home plate and put Northwestern in front, 2-1.

The Wildcats added a run in the next inning when Jake Schieber hit a double to the right-center fence that brought home Willie Bourbon from second base. Bourbon went 1-for-3 in the game with a single, run scored and a walk.

Saint Leo would go on to score four unanswered runs to take a 5-3 final.

Josh Davis had a nice outing for the Wildcats. The right-hander came out of the bullpen and tossed two-hitless innings, striking out three.

Northwestern will be back in action tomorrow at the Snowbird Classic for a doubleheader against Boston College (10 a.m. CT) and Butler (2 p.m. CT). Left-hander Reed Mason (1-0) will get the start tomorrow versus Boston College.
